Description:

Shocking! Devastating! Unprecedented! These are a few of the words that are frequently used to describe the current state of our world. Natural disasters, wars, gun violence, racial violence and political unrest are only a few of the significant events that ripple through humanity and leave a lasting imprint on individuals and on society. As mental health professionals, we hold the unique position of advocating and holding space for our clients as they process these events while simultaneously trying to care for ourselves. Many mental health professionals are faced with the challenge of remaining actively engaged in current events while also battling inner burnout, anxiety and heartache.

A note for expectations: This presentation will reference current events which weigh heavily on the hearts of many. In order to reduce emotional labor of attendees and create a welcoming and affirmative environment for all, current events will not be discussed in detail or processed in a group setting. Ana and Lauren are committed to creating a safe space where diversity is honored and protected.

Learning Objectives:

  • Attendees will gain an understanding of the components of media literacy.
  • Attendees will learn strategies to reduce emotional labor when discussing current events with others.
  • Attendees will be able to describe the ways that media overload impacts mental health.
