Description:
Adoption is a lifelong journey that significantly shapes identity, relationships, and mental health. However, many mental health professionals lack formal training on the unique challenges faced by adopted people. Additionally, most professionals are already working with adopted clients without realizing it, as many do not readily disclose their adoption status. While personal experience or connection to adoption can provide valuable insight, it is not enough to ensure professional competence in this area. This workshop aims to equip clinicians with foundational competencies necessary for providing effective and informed care to this population. Topics will include screening for abusive adoptive family history, understanding search and reunion issues, supporting identity development, and recognizing co-occurring disorders. Through lecture, case studies, and interactive discussions, participants will gain essential skills to enhance their clinical practice and better support adopted people.
Learning Objectives:
Identify key psychological and developmental concerns commonly experienced by adopted people.
Develop skills to identify red flags and screen for histories of abuse or neglect within adoptive families.
Understand the emotional and psychological complexities of search and reunion experiences.
Explore identity development challenges specific to adoptees, including issues related to race, culture, and belonging.
Recognize common co-occurring disorders, such as depression, anxiety, PTSD, substance use, and eating disorders that may be present in adoptee clients.
Implement trauma-informed, adoptee-affirming therapeutic approaches to support healing and resilience
