Description:

This workshop provides clinical mental health professionals with essential knowledge and skills to assess and intervene in cases of suicidality, with a focus on diverse and vulnerable populations. Participants will explore the complexity of suicide, examining its definition, risk factors, and the influence of cultural, racial, and societal factors. Using data from the CDC and other sources, the workshop highlights the importance of using appropriate terminology and culturally competent assessments. Attendees will learn about the impacts of COVID-19, the role of therapist biases, and the need for self-regulation when working with clients. Through interactive discussions, the workshop emphasizes practical strategies for connecting with clients, asking the right questions, and understanding the primal nature of suicidality.

Learning Objectives:

  • Recognize risk factors that increase suicidality in marginalized groups, such as LGBTQ+ individuals, racial minorities, and those facing poverty or disability.

  • Identify ways to stay calm and focused when assessing suicidality, ensuring they provide effective and compassionate care.

  • Identify at least two tools for suicidality screening

  • Explain at least two limitations of providers when attempting to safeguard someone from a suicide attempt
