Time: 9:30 am - 11 am CDT

In recent years, violence against the transgender and gender-diverse community has surged at an alarming rate, sparking widespread concern and urgent calls for action. This presentation aims to provide a comprehensive exploration of the social-ecological model of violence, a framework that examines the multifaceted factors influencing violence within societies. By dissecting the individual, relationship, community, and societal levels within this model, we will uncover how these interconnected factors collectively contribute to the systemic violence faced by transgender individuals. After laying the groundwork for understanding how violence against the trans community is perpetuated, the presentation will then pivot to solutions. We will explore actionable strategies that can be employed at each level of the social-ecological model to combat these factors and reduce the prevalence of violence.

Learning Objectives:

  • Introduce and explain the components of the social-ecological model of violence, demonstrating how these factors intersect to perpetuate violence.

  • Identify specific key factors within the model that contribute to violence against the trans community.

  • Equip attendees with practical approaches and actions that can be implemented across all levels to reduce violence and support the safety of transgender individuals.

  • Foster a sense of shared responsibility among attendees, encouraging them to engage in advocacy, allyship and policy change efforts that address the root causes of violence.
