This training will assist Waters Kraus’s team to work with clients that have experienced sexual assault or sexual abuse as a child in a trauma-informed manner.Â
Learning Objectives:
- Different resources/support that we should provide our sex abuse clients.
- The most effective ways to communicate with sex assault victims without re-traumatizing them.
- Identifying and being aware of unique challenges inherent to sex assault victims.
About Our Speaker:
Demetrice M. Lopez is a law professor, practicing attorney, consultant, and former prosecutor specializing in gender violence law. As a prosecutor for nearly a decade, Demetrice represented the State of Texas in the prosecution of violent offenders for intimate partner violence, intimate partner homicide, capital murder, sexual assault, sex trafficking, stalking, and other offenses. Demetrice was a founding member of Tarrant County’s Domestic Violence High Risk Team and led Tarrant County’s Adult Fatality Review Team where she and other experts worked to identify gaps in the legal system, correct systemic issues, and drive policy change.Â
Drawing upon her years of experience, the focus of Demetrice’s legal, academic, and consultive work is on empowering survivors and those who serve them to comprehend the foundations of gender-based violence and the pertinent laws governing the subject matter. Demetrice was born and raised in Dallas, Texas. Demetrice obtained her undergraduate degree from Southern Methodist University where she double majored in Political Science and Sociology. Demetrice obtained her law degree from the University of Houston Law Center. Demetrice enjoys reading, traveling, and spending time with her husband and two wonderful children.
