This course is designed to inform the law enforcement community how to utilize the trauma informed approach when responding to and investigating sexual assaults. The course will begin with the foundations of what trauma is and the effects it has on the brain and body. Attendees will then progress into trauma informed interview techniques, report writing concerns, dynamics of sexual assaults and learn ways to overcome the challenges that these cases can present. The information presented is designed to benefit all law enforcement professionals regardless of their experience in the profession.

Learning Objectives:

  • Understand trauma and how the body responds physically and mentally
  • Understand the "best practices" to be used when interviewing survivors of traumatic events
  • Understand the dynamics of Sexual Assault
  • Recognize barriers to reporting and how to overcome them
  • Identify concerns regarding marginalized population groups and how to overcome them
  • Identify investigative strategies that minimize revictimization

About Our Speaker:

Sabrina Blevins is a passionate criminal justice professional with experience investigating intimate partner violence and sexual assaults. She is dedicated to educating the criminal justice community on the traumatic effects of intimate partner violence and the methods of investigation that will minimize further trauma to survivors. Sabrina’s experience in law enforcement over the period of 10 years includes time spent investigating street level narcotics, intimate partner violence, sexual assaults, as well as locating and apprehending violent felons. She holds an Advanced Texas Peace Officers License and has amassed over 4,200 hours of continuing education. Sabrina is a proud member of the LGBTQIA+ community and is devoted to ensuring that survivors from all walks of life receive the care that they so much deserve.
